Des Moines Building Division
The Building Division is responsible for overseeing the building construction within the City of Des Moines. They review building plans for compliance with applicable local and national codes, issues building permits and inspects buildings during construction for compliance with the approved plans. They are also the final accepting authority for occupancy permits.

Notice of Fee Schedule Changes – Building Department
Effective January 1, 2026, the City of Des Moines Building Department has implemented a new, consolidated permit fee schedule.
Key Changes:
• One combined fee schedule: Building permit valuation fees, residential permit fees, and the updated permit technology fees are now presented together in a single schedule for easier reference.
• Updated valuation table: The building permit valuation table is updated and expanded to include higher-valuation tiers (including categories beyond $1,000,000).
• Additional fees: The schedule lists items such as TCO/phased occupancy fees, re-inspections, extensions/renewals (per policy), and expedited review.
