Basic Citizens Academy

Des Moines Police Department Basic Citizens Academy

The Des Moines Police Department Basic Citizens Academy provides an opportunity for citizens to get up close and personal with the resources and tools the police department uses to keep them safe.

This free ten-week program will be held on the Wednesday evenings from 6:30-9:00pm, next class starting September 18, 2019. The academy will include field trips and classroom training by officers, detectives and other law enforcement personnel.

Due to the sensitive nature of some subjects being presented in the Des Moines Police Citizens Academy, a criminal history background check will be conducted on all individuals applying for attendance into the Academy.

Applications will not be considered for:

  • Persons under the age of eighteen (18).
  • Persons who are not Des Moines residents or Des Moines business owners.
  • Persons with a felony conviction or recent misdemeanor convictions.

The Des Moines Police Department reserves the right to deny attendance to any person if the results of the person's background investigation causes concern regarding the safety, legality or advisability of the person's attendance. Space is limited so register early!
