To assist you in making yourself safe the Des Moines Police Department will be holding monthly safety seminars at the Des Moines Activity Center. Please join us on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 11:00am when we come together to explore ways to keep you safe!

BALANCE & FALL SCREENING Beginning in February, physical therapist Jeff Wheeler with Highline Therapy Services/Highline Medical Center will host quarterly balance and fall screenings. Falls are the #1 reason for injuries as we age. Stop by (no appointment necessary) between 11am-12noon for this free 5 minute screening. It could save your life!!!! Upcoming dates are Thursday, May 22nd and Thursday Augut 21st.

Women’s Self Defense Class This program is presented by the NP Police Department and is taught using the nationally recognized Rape Aggression Defense System (RAP). This is a detailed, hands on course for women that begins with crime prevention, risk reduction, and avoidance while progressing on to the basics of hands on self-defense. This program will teach defensive concepts and techniques against various types of assault, by utilizing easy, effective and proven self defense tactics. Instructors are certified in the area of women’s self defense. Please wear athletic attire. 6/9,10,16 & 17 M & T 1-4pm Free
Minor Home Repair Program The City of Des Moines Minor Home Repair Program provides grant funds to subsidize repairs and maintenance for qualified homeowners. Housing repair services focus on maintaining health and safety, preserving the home and increasing energy efficiency. The program serves both low and moderate income Des Moines homeowners. Transit Training Learn to confidently ride the bus to and from your favorite places. Find out how to be “footloose and fancy-free” when it comes to using public transportation. Our first session will cover how to use METRO transit. The next day we will travel together by bus to downtown Seattle, dropping off at Pike Place Market with 3 hours to enjoy the Market, Westlake Center and more. From Antenna to DTV-What You Need to Know If you still use the antenna for your tv you need to attend this program. Learn about the upcoming transition to a digital receiver for your old television. There will also be a demonstration of digital-to-analog converter boxes. Presented by the FCC. 8/11 M 7pm Free
*Falls Prevention South King Co. Fire and Rescue participates in a falls prevention program. To qualify, you must be 60 years or older, live independently, have either fallen in the past or be at risk of falling and live in Des Moines or greater Federal Way. Educators from the fire department will visit your home to do a safety assessment. They will cover why falls happen and give you ideas on how to reduce injuries at home. They can also install risk reduction devices such as: night lights, bathtub bars, shower chairs, raised toilet seats, hand-held showers, bathtub mats, carpet skid pads and bed rails. THE FOLLOWING ARE REGULARLY SCHEDULED MONTHLY PROGRAMS:
Diabetes Support Group- 3rd Tuesdays of every month, 1-2:30pm with John Carroll, volunteer health mentor. Share information and tips to live better with diabetes. 5/20, 6/17,7/15 and 8/19.
Caregiver’s Support Group- 4th Tuesday of the month, 1-2pm with Shirley Ferraro, group facilitator. Drop-ins welcome. For anyone who has a loved one with illness, disability, or memory problems, whether they live with you or not. Summer dates: 5/27, 6/24, 7/22 and 8/26.
Grief and Loss Support Group- facilitated by Shirley Ferraro. How do you handle loss and grief? Share your experience with others in the same situation. This group will meet on Tuesday, May 13th, 10am to learn more about the purpose of the group and to plan future meetings. Call Des Moines Activity Center for more details.
Walking Group- every Tuesday 12:30pm, with John and Nancy Corr, volunteer health mentors. Meet at the Activity Center. The group decides where to go for a local area walk, rain or shine!
