Traffic Calming Program
Speed Bumps / Traffic Calming The City of Des Moines has a Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program (NTCP). Typically, each year enough money is budgeted to do one or two traffic calming / safety projects depending on their complexity.
The City of Des Moines receives numerous requests for the installation of traffic-calming devices such as speed humps or traffic circles. The Neighborhood Traffic Control Program (NTCP) was developed to prioritize these requests and address neighborhood streets with the most serious speeding and safety concerns. Typically, the NTCP receives enough funds to design and construct 1 or 2 traffic-calming projects each year, depending on complexity. To be added to the NTCP candidate list, fill out the NTCP Interest Form. The form identifies the problem location and helps us to confirm that there is widespread neighborhood support for a traffic-calming project. After the form has been submitted, the Transportation Services Division will conduct background research to determine the relative priority of the requested site location. Project scoring is based on factors such as accident history, traffic speed, traffic volume, pedestrian volume, and community interest.
