Beach Park Projects

Des Moines Creek & Beach Park Construction Projects Summer 2007

The City in partnership with other agencies has embarked on several projects that will improve Des Moines Beach Park infrastructure, and restore Des Moines Creek by reducing flooding.  For public safety purposes, construction areas within the Park and along the trail must be closed intermittently to pedestrians and vehicles.  The following is a list of projects will take place during the summer of 2007:

• Removal of Rotary play areas due to unsafe location within construction zones: mid June through 2008 (to be relocated at Field House Park)
• Completing Midway Sewer District outfall pipe and Des Moines Creek high flow bypass for stormwater to prevent erosion and flooding and channeling high flows directly to Puget Sound- Project construction: mid June through September 
• Dredging the Des Moines Creek to return the creek to its channel- Project construction: mid July through  mid August
• Upgrading utilities- project construction: mid August-mid September
• Remodeling the Auditorium - project construction: October through June
• Completing Des Moines Creek Habitat restoration- project construction: August through September
• Completing the Marine View Drive Bridge – culvert abandonment and stream bank work:  mid July through mid August
• Hillside slide repairs along Des Moines Creek- project construction: August through November

Parking within the Beach Park is limited to official vehicles and scheduled park users only. Alternate parking is located at the Des Moines Marina. The speed limit in park construction zones is 5 MPH.  Please follow posted park regulations.

Thank you for your patience during this project period. The completed improvements will enhance the use of the park and quality of life for the citizens of Des Moines.

The City anticipates the following projects will take place during the summer of 2008:
 
• Completing the Des Moines Creek Trail from the Midway Sewer Treatment Plant, through Beach Park and into Downtown
• Completing Stream Channel Phase II dredging and channel widening to prevent flooding in the future
• Raising the Dining Hall above the 100-year flood plain (plus foundation work)
• Remodeling the Dining Hall, Picnic Shelter and Sun Home Lodge
