The purpose of the Des Moines Police Department Traffic Unit is to support the Department’s mission in serving and protecting persons and property in the City of Des Moines. The Traffic Unit has the responsibility of providing traffic enforcement and traffic education services. Their primary goal is to promote traffic safety and reduce accidents.
We currently have three officers assigned to this unit. Two ride motorcycles, the third traffic officer uses a normal patrol vehicle.
Officers in the Traffic Unit enforce all of the traffic laws with particular emphasis on speeding in school zones, pedestrian violations, speeding and right of way. They concentrate on specific problem areas within the city where there are high incidents of violations or accidents occurring.
We recently purchased a mobile radar traffic trailer through a grant from the Washington State Traffic Commission. The radar trailer is used to monitor vehicle speeds and visually display the speed of passing vehicles. It is a fully functional radar unit and if an officer is present the officer MAY write tickets based off the radar readings. The trailer will not take photographs of your vehicle nor will it send you a ticket in the mail if you are speeding. It will also "lock out" at a specific speed so that if someone decides to see how fast they can go, the speed will not be displayed.
