What To Do if You Become the Victim of Identity Theft If you believe you have become the victim of identity theft or fraud, you must act immediately to minimize the damage to your personal funds and your reputation. Report the crime to your local police department. Des Moines Police Online Reporting System Notify your bank of the theft. Cancel your accounts and obtain new account numbers. Contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Under the Identify Theft and Assumption Deterrence Act, the FTC is responsible for receiving and processing complaints from people who believe they may be victims of identity theft. Ask for replacement cards with new account numbers for all open accounts, have all old accounts processed as “account closed at consumer’s request”. Contact the fraud units of the three major credit reporting agencies. Report that you’re Identification has been used to apply for fraudulent credit and request that you accounts be flagged. Equifax Experian (formerly TRW) Trans Union Contact the major check verification companies if you have had checks stolen or bank accounts set up by an identity thief.
If you suspect the use of mail to commit the fraud against you, contact your local postal inspection service. |
