What To Do to Avoid Becoming a Victim of Identity Theft
Unlike your fingerprints, which are unique to you and cannot be given to someone else for their use, your personal data can fall into the wrong hands and then be used to personally profit someone else at your expense. Many people do not realize how easy a criminal can obtain your personal data with out having to break into your home.
To minimize your risk of becoming a victim of identity theft consider the following:
- Be stingy, about giving out your personal information to other unless you have a reason to trust them, regardless of where you are. When at home, adopt a “need to know” approach to your personal data. Do you really need to have your drivers license number on your personal checks? How about a telephone number?
- Check you financial information regularly, and look for what should be there and what shouldn’t.
- Periodically ask for a copy of your credit report and verify the information that is listed.
To order a copy of your credit report from the principal credit reporting companies contact: Equifax Experian (formerly TRW) Trans Union P.O Box 740241 P.O Box 2104 P.O Box 390 Atlanta GA 30374-0241 Allen TX 75013 Springfield PA 19064 (800) 685-1111 (888) 397-3742 (800) 888-4213
- 4. Maintain careful financial records of your banking and credit card accounts.
- Invest in a paper shredder. Never discard papers that contain your personal data. All credit card receipts, void checks, pre-approved credit card offers etc. should be shredded then thrown away. Another option is use these papers as fire starters.
