Commissioned Positions
Applications may be obtained at city hall during business hours. Minimum qualifications for police officer applicants (regular and reserve) are:
- 21 years of age at time of application
- high school diploma or GED
- U.S. citizenship
- Possession of or ability to obtain a Washington State driver’s license.

Entry level officers, as a condition of employment, must be able to pass the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission’s Basic Law Enforcement Academy and the Department’s Field Training Program. New hires are on probation for a period of 12 months, following certification by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission, per Civil Service Commission Rules.
Non-Commissioned Positions
Non-commissioned positions within the department include records specialists, office manager, animal control officer, community service officer and evidence specialists. Applications may be obtained at city hall during normal business hours or online. Minimum qualifications for non-commissioned positions are:
- 18 years of age at time of hire
- high school diploma or GED
- U.S. citizenship
- Possession of or ability to obtain a Washington State driver’s license.
Depending on the position, there is a written test, oral board interview, physical agility test, background investigation, polygraph examination, psychological exam, and Chief’s interview. Each full-time position within the police department is under the established rules and regulations of the Civil Service Commission. All testing and eligibility lists are created and administered pursuant to these rules and regulations. Applications are accepted only when there is an opening for that position.
