What to do if you have lost a pet, found a pet, need to place your pet in a
new home, or have an animal emergency:
• Citizens who find a pet in the city limits of Des Moines should contact
the Animal Control Division of the Police Department (206) 870-6549 or (206)
878-3301 regarding care and possible impoundment of the animal.
• Citizens who have lost a pet should check all area shelters and police
departments, as pets can roam and cross into other jurisdictions.
• Citizens thinking of placing their own pet in a new home may call the
Animal Control Officer for resources and assistance to help keep their pet;
however, if there is no other option, they should contact area rescue
groups, area shelters, and Petfinder.com for possible placement assistance.
• And as always, if a public safety emergency is occurring such as an
in-progress vicious dog attack , citizens should call 911.

ANIMAL LICENSES: All dogs and cats over 6 months of age must be vaccinated for rabies, licensed, and wear the tag on their collar. Annual license fee for altered dogs and cats is $20.00, unaltered is $60.00. Animal licenses (dog and cat) are valid January through December. There is a 60 day late fee of 50% of the license fee, and 120 day late fee of 100% of the license fee. Senior citizens, 65 and over, may obtain a lifetime license for their altered pet for no charge.
Licenses may be purchased by mail, or in person at the Des Moines Police Department,
or through the Animal Control Officer. For your convenience, a license form may be printed, completed, clipped (by clicking here) and brought in or mailed together with your payment and a copy of current rabies vaccination/alteration to:
