Adopt A Spot Program

The City of Des Moines Parks, Recreation and Senior Services Department facilitates “Adopt-a-Spot” partnerships that provide an opportunity for citizens to better connect with their community. Projects range from park clean-ups,  landscaping, tree planting, and general sprucing up.

There are many “spots” available for adoption throughout the city such as Big Catch Plaza, South Marina Park, and Overlook I & II Parks.

Help us enhance the beauty of our community by participating in the "Adopt-a-Spot" Program.   You can make a difference!

Anyone interested in learning more about this program,
please call Annette Chomica at (206) 870-6547
or email achomica@desmoineswa.gov

Beach Naturalist Program

Beach Naturalists are local citizens who care about Puget Sound beaches and want to protect them. More than 100 Naturalists have volunteered to help people learn about and enjoy area beaches this summer.

Beach Naturalists know their beach. They can help you enjoy the beach without harming it. They can tell you what seastars eat, why barnacles stand on their heads and how moon snails lay their eggs. Children are especially welcome!

Des Moines Memorial Bench Donation Program

The Des Moines Bench Program allows citizens to contribute to the cost of installing a park bench at one of the city's parks including Steven J. Underwood Memorial Park, Des Moines Activity Center, and many other sites. The current cost of a standard bench is $1000.

The attractive new benches are made from recycled plastic, which is environmentally and maintenance friendly. The bench fees cover the cost of the bench and standard memorial engraving. Bench installation and ongoing maintenance costs will be paid by the city. Bench donations are accepted on the basis that they will be maintained for 10 years at a specified park location, after which the disposition of the gift is at the sole discretion of the City of Des Moines.

Former bench owners will have priority regarding bench replacement sites. Currently, there are no bench sites available at the Des Moines Beach Park and Overlook Park I.

If you are interested in bench donation or would like more information,
please contact Annette Chomica at
(206) 870-6547 or email at achomica@cityofdesmoines.com .
