Adopt A Spot Program

The City of Des Moines Parks, Recreation and Senior Services Department facilitates “Adopt-a-Spot” partnerships that provide an opportunity for citizens to better connect with their community. Projects range from park clean-ups,  landscaping, tree planting, and general sprucing up.

There are many “spots” available for adoption throughout the city such as Big Catch Plaza, South Marina Park, and Overlook I & II Parks.

Help us enhance the beauty of our community by participating in the "Adopt-a-Spot" Program.   You can make a difference!

Anyone interested in learning more about this program,

Beach Naturalist Program

Beach Naturalists are local citizens who care about Puget Sound beaches and want to protect them. More than 100 Naturalists have volunteered to help people learn about and enjoy area beaches this summer.

Beach Naturalists know their beach. They can help you enjoy the beach without harming it. They can tell you what seastars eat, why barnacles stand on their heads and how moon snails lay their eggs. Children are especially welcome!

For more information on King County Beach Naturalist Program,

Des Moines Memorial Bench Donation Program

Beach_BenchThe City of Des Moines Memorial Bench Program allows citizens to contribute to the cost of installing a park bench at one of the City's parks that comes under the jurisdiction of the Park and Recreation Department. Bench donations are accepted on the basis that they will be maintained for 10 years at a specified park location, after which time the disposition of the gift is at the sole discretion of the City of Des Moines.

The cost of a standard 6ft park bench including installation is $1,000.00. The attractive benches are made from recycled plastic and are environmentally and maintenance friendly. In certain parks, a specialized bench might need to be used to retain the character of the surrounding gardens which may cost more.

Engraving is not included in the bench price but can be purchased at an additional cost: Engraving text size is 1 ½ inches.
• 1 to 21 characters (including spaces and punctuation on one bench board) is $75.00
• 22 to 35 characters (including spaces and punctuation on one bench board) is $125.00

Bench site availability is limited and will be chosen in consultation with Park and Recreation staff.

If you are interested in bench donation, download a bench donation form or please contact
Annette Chomica at (206) 870-6547 or email at achomica@desmoineswa.gov .
