A CITY & COMMUNITY COLLABORATION for a HEALTHIER DES MOINES

About The Daisy Sonju Community Garden & Pea Patch

In 1996, Daisy Sonju and her family donated a 9.3 acre parcel, formerly her family home,
to the City of Des Moines. The City created a Master Plan to develop the property as a conservancy park that included an orchard and community garden, picnicking, open space, creek and recreational trails. In 2010, with volunteer leadership, the City in collaboration with gardening advocates (funders, sponsors, volunteers) began to clear the orchard and plan for a community garden. Daisy’s Garden includes: a 22-plot pea patch, demonstration beds for local elementary school groups, an herb garden, seating areas, planting space for the Des Moines Area Food Bank, and senior-accessible raised beds. The orchard next to the garden will supply apples and cherries to the community food coalition. We envision inspired residents enjoying fresh air, sunshine (we hope!), bountiful nutritious fruits, vegetables, and herbs with each other as they learn about planting, nurturing, harvesting, and donating food to others.

Beginning in 2012, Boy Scouts of America will begin trail construction, connecting 16th Ave S. with 20th Ave. S. and Parkside Elementary School.

About the City & Community Collaboration for a Healthier Des Moines

Garden sponsors and supporters include: City of Des Moines Parks, Recreation and Senior Services, City of Des Moines Public Works, Des Moines Legacy Foundation; Rotary Club of Des Moines; the Des Moines Area Food Bank, Furney’s Nursery; Garden & Bloome; Cleanscapes; JustGarden!; K&A Landscaping, City Fruit, and many community volunteers.

"We are fortunate to have a City Council, community partners, and volunteers who are committed to working together for a healthier Des Moines. Community gardens provide many social, economic, and public health benefits. The garden will provide healthy food and physical activity for families that garden the spaces, offer fresh produce donations to the local food bank, offer educational sessions, create a sense of community, act as a public meeting place, and beautify the neighborhood. Everyone’s saying - “Let’s do this!” The City is celebrating first steps, we have a ways to go, and we’ll get there,” said Patrice Thorell, Director, Parks, Recreation, and Senior Services.
