Code EnforcementThe City of Des Moines has adopted various rules and regulations as part of the Des Moines Municipal Code, which are designed to ensure safe and attractive neighborhoods for our citizens, both business and residential. The City’s goal is to gain compliance with the regulations contained in the Des Moines Municipal Code through public awareness, communication and cooperation; and to enforce those codes with the highest degree of personal and professional integrity. In general, Des Moines adopts various land use regulations to ensure that individual property owners do not use their property in a manner that is detrimental to the greater public welfare. The Des Moines Code Enforcement Program is predominately complaint driven. This is purposeful so that the city response to a given situation is based upon specific information about a particular property that allegedly is violating city codes. We ask that complaints be received in writing and signed in order to prevent harassment or retaliatory actions in neighborhood disputes. The enforcement is carried out in a variety of methods, starting with citizen education and requests for compliance, and then moving to issuance of citations and potential civil penalties if needed. By bringing violations to our attention, you are helping to protect the property values and aesthetics of your neighborhood. To report violations, please print the City of Des Moines Code Enforcement Request form, then mail it to the City or fax it to 206-870-6544. Please include the specific violation and the exact street address where it is occurring. It is helpful when investigating the complaint to have your name and phone number. If you have questions related to code enforcement, please email CodeEnforcement@desmoineswa.gov or call 206-870-6558.
