SPECIAL SPRING CLEAN COLLECTION EVENT
SPONSORED BY CITY OF DES MOINES AND ALLIED WASTE SERVICES
COLLECTION WILL BE ON YOUR REGULAR GARBAGE PICKUP DAY APRIL 23RD – 27TH, 2007
TAGGED BULKY ITEMS AND APPLIANCES WILL BE PICKED UP ON APRIL 23rd OR 24th(see below)
This FREE collection event is available only to single family residences, duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes within the City of Des Moines. Appliances and other bulky items will be picked up for a small fee on April 23rdor 24th. Collection of garbage, recyclables and yard waste will occur on your regular garbage service day between April 23rd and April 27th (refer to the map) for materials meeting the guidelines in this brochure. Each collection vehicle (garbage - yard waste - recyclables - bulky items) will drive by only once. You do not need to be a customer of Allied Waste to participate.
PLEASE FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW:
• Materials must be sorted into the appropriate pile. Separate piles should be made for garbage, recyclables and yard waste. Tires and hot tubs will not be picked up.
• Materials must be placed in containers (i.e. paper bags, boxes, cans, etc) and clearly labeled.
• All materials must be placed at curbside no later than 7 a.m. on the day of service.
• Yard waste must be bundled with natural fiber twine or placed in a labeled container, can, box, or biodegradable bag (plastic bags will not be picked up) and weigh no more than 60 lbs.
• Pickup of all bulky items must be pre-paid. Purchase your tag by 4:30 p.m. on April 9th through April 19th at the Des Moines Planning, Building, and Public Works Department, 21630 11th Ave. South, Suite D. For information, call (206) 870-7576.
• ABSOLUTELY NO HAZARDOUS WASTE ITEMS OR THEIR CONTAINERS will be collected. Hazardous waste includes paints, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, antifreeze, and batteries. APPLIANCES/BULKY ITEMS Set tagged appliances and other bulky items at the curb by 7 a.m. on April 23td (for collection on April 23rd or 24th). Tags for refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners cost $25.00 because they contain harmful gases that can damage the ozone if not disposed of properly. For all other appliances, the fee is $25.00. All appliances will be recycled.
Tags for bulky items weighing more than 60 lbs. cost $25.00. All tags may be purchased starting April 9th at the Des Moines Planning Building, and Public Works Department, located at 21630 11th Ave. South, Suite D between 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call (206) 870-7576 with any questions.
GARBAGE Garbage is waste materials and does not include tires, recyclables, yard waste or hazardous wastes (i.e. paints, pest killers, petroleum products, solvents, etc.). Garbage items and full containers must not weigh more than 60 lbs.
RECYCLABLE MATERIALS Recyclable materials consist of newspapers, magazines, junk mail, cardboard, aluminum, tin cans, plastic bottles with a number “1 - 7” stamped on the bottom and glass beverage/food containers. Glass (green, brown, and clear) bottles and jars must be placed in a separate container from the other recyclables.
YARD WASTE Yard waste includes grass clippings, branches/prunings (less than 3 feet long and 3 inches in diameter) or leaves. Rocks, dirt and sod are not acceptable. Yard waste must be bound with natural fibers into a bundle no larger than 3’ x 3’ or placed in biodegradable containers (i.e. cardboard boxes or paper bags) or yard waste containers. Yard waste containers and bundles must not weigh more than 60 lbs. Yard waste in plastic bags will not be collected.
