Des Moines is a mostly residential community that it situated along Puget Sound midway between Seattle and Tacoma in Washington state. The population as of April 1, 2004 was 29,020 and was the 32nd largest city in the state. It also was the 12th largest city in King County. As the map indicates, Des Moines is a long and narrow city 6.3 miles long and 2.1 wide covering 4,340 acres.
According to the 2000 Census, the median age is 37 years old and is roughly 75% white, with Asian following with 8.3% and Black or African American at 7.2%. The median household income for Des Moines was $48,971.
Major employers in Des Moines are The Highline School District, Highline Community College, The City of Des Moines and three retirement centers.
