Police Department The Des Moines Police Department is expanding its current volunteer program. We are looking for volunteers with ideas and a desire to improve the community where you live, work, and play. If you are interested in assisting the Police Department with a variety of tasks from neighborhood canvassing, citizen patrols, handicap parking enforcement, data entry, animal licensing, and crime prevention issues, please contact CSO Kory Batterman at 206-870-7617.
Des Moines Police Department Volunteer Position Descriptions
Position: Front Desk Person Objective: To provide assistance and information to the general public. Schedule: One 4-hour shift per week.
Description of Duties: Answer telephones Greet public upon entry into sub-station Stuffing envelopes Updating and stocking displays Keep front lobby area clean. Maintaining calendar of public meeting room usage
Qualifications: • Comfortable working within a public safety environment which sometimes involves people-related emergencies and crisis/conflict management. • Skills in listening and communicating by telephone and in-person • Positive and supportive attitude with people of all backgrounds and abilities • Supportive of the philosophy of the Des Moines Police Department. • Willing to accept orders from others as necessary without question.
Requirements 6 month commitment 18 years of age or older Ability to pass a background check Ability to multi-task. Commitment to comply with confidentiality requirements and policies governing police operations
Position: Citizen on Patrol Objective: To assist patrol officers with non-enforcement support services. Schedule: Two 4-hour shifts per week.
Descriptions of Duties: Provide vacation house checks to residents of Des Moines. Identify and maintain the Des Moines Graffiti Abatement Program Assist Community Service Officers with community notifications. Assist Community Service Officers as need with various programs. Provide speed survey’s and placement of speed trailer.
Qualifications: • Comfortable working within a public safety environment which sometimes involves people-related emergencies and crisis/conflict management. • Skills in listening and communicating by telephone and in-person • Positive and supportive attitude with people of all backgrounds and abilities • Supportive of the philosophy of the Des Moines Police Department. • Willing to accept orders from others as necessary without question.
Requirements 6 month commitment 18 years of age or older Possess a valid Washington State Driver License and good driving record Ability to pass a background check Ability to multi-task. Commitment to comply with confidentiality requirements and policies governing police operations
Position: Crime Free Housing Assistant Objective: To provide assistance to the Crime Free Housing Coordinator. Schedule: One 4-hour shift per week.
Description of Duties: Data entry of crime data Updating rental housing files Mailing of weekly notices to rental properties Assist coordinator with meetings and training class preparation
Qualifications: • Extensive Computer Experience • Comfortable working within a public safety environment which sometimes involves people-related emergencies and crisis/conflict management. • Skills in listening and communicating by telephone and in-person • Positive and supportive attitude with people of all backgrounds and abilities • Supportive of the philosophy of the Des Moines Police Department. • Willing to accept orders from others as necessary without question.
Requirements Computer experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, email, data entry and mail merge. 6 month commitment 18 years of age or older Ability to pass a background check Ability to multi-task. Commitment to comply with confidentiality requirements and policies governing police operations
