Des Moines Municipal Code
Title 5 requires all persons wishing to conduct any business within the City of Des Moines to first secure a City of Des Moines business license. With the exception of Mobile or Stationary Vendors, all business licenses issued under Title 5 are granted for the calendar year of issuance, and shall be renewed on or before February 15th of the year following its date of issuance. If a license is not renewed by February 15th, a new application must be made, accompanied by an additional fee of 100 percent of the fee payable upon an original application.

Each license packet contains an explanation of the type of license, helpful hints for completing an application, and the application form.

There are several options available for
completing and submitting your application.
- Print a blank license form, manually
fill out, and mail, with the appropriate fees.
- Fill out online, print, and mail, with
the appropriate fees.
- Fill out online and pay online via
Official Payments. Completed application and payment confirmation
is sent directly to City Clerk. This option is only available for
applications identified with "Pay Online". There is a $4.95 service and
processing fee for all online payments. This fee is assessed and
collected by the credit card processing company and does not go to the
City.

SPECIAL LICENSES: There are some activities that require additional licenses, fees or taxes. Included, but not limited to:
- Adult entertainment
- Cabaret licenses for live music, entertainment, and/or dancing
- Electronic amusement/game devices such as juke boxes, pool tables, and game devices
- Massage parlors, bathhouses
- Mobile vendors: limited to selling of food
- Pawnbroker, secondhand dealer
- Punch board/pull tab devices
- Stationary vendor: food, Washington-grown produce, flowers, Christmas trees
