City Government

The City of Des Moines delivers public services with a blend of small-town friendliness and a dedication to excellence. The seven members of the City Council are elected at large and select two members of the Council to serve as Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem. The City Council also hires the City Manager—a professional manager held accountable for making Council direction a reality. The City Manager oversees several departments to ensure public services are provided effectively and efficiently. Meanwhile, our citizens guide all aspects of City government through elections, advisory boards, public hearings, meetings, and community workshops. This section of our website provides more information about our elected officials, departments, employees, and services.
