Statement from the City Manager

On behalf of the City administration of Des Moines, I would like to state that we respect Black Lives Matter.  We abhor and oppose institutional racism and institutional violence.  Events throughout the country that have ended in the murder of black people are wrong and yet occur because of centuries of unaddressed racism and hatred.

In our City, we seek to be a part of the solution and not be a part of the problem.  Going forward we will do our part to review our police operations to assure they are consistent with appropriate safeguards.  We will continue to emphasize community policing and work to enhance recruitment of minority police officers.

We are appalled by the loss of life that has occurred.  We want to learn from this.  We want to do all our jobs better.  We want to support justice in our community and nation.
